Birth Through Age 25
Why is physical development important?
Humans live in a physical world, so it is important to know how to interact with the surrounding world. Physical development also includes how the brain develops, which is the most important part of our body.

Developing physical skills is a process every human goes through when growing up. There are two basics forms, gross motor skills and fine motor skills.
Gross Motor Skills: large muscles in the body. Example: running, lifting, balancing.
Fine Motor Skills: small muscles in the body. Example: chewing, writing, waving.
These motor skills are developed by experience. Playing and role playing are two of those experiences. By playing or role playing, children gain more experience in movement and social norms of how to move the body. (Levine & Munsch)

By role playing in a "kitchen" children can learn how to move around in a real kitchen, which will be helpful in their futures. Pretending to cook can teach children the appropriate ways to hold certain kitchen appliances (fine motor skill).
