Birth Through Age 25
Why is cognitive development important?
Cognition is the growth of our minds and how humans understand the world.

Piaget had a huge role in cognitive development. He created a theory of four cognitive developmental stages.
Sensorimotor (birth to 2 years): Infants understand the world through the information they take in through their senses and their actions.
Preoperational (2 to 7 years): Young children do not yet think logically, and their thinking is egocentric.
Concrete operations (7 to 12 years): Children now think logically, but their thinking is concrete, not abstract.
Formal operations (12 years and older): Adolescents can think both logically and abstractly.

This video shows examples of object permanence. Toddlers develop to know an object is there even when they can not see it.
This video shows a child in the concrete stage. She can think logically about the juice in the glasses.

This video shows a child that is in the preoperational stage of Piaget's theory. She can think intuitively but not logically.
This video shows how a person in the formal operations stage can think logically and abstractly.
