Bowlby put together four stages of attachment development:
Preattachment (birth to 6 weeks): infants have no real attachment to mother and father. The infant acts in certain ways to attract other to take care of it so it will survive. Attachment in the making (6 weeks to 6-8 months): babies begin to develop social smiling that eventually is only for people who are familiar to the baby. Stranger anxiety can occur with infants where they know who strangers are and who their family is. Clear-cut attachment (6-8 months to 18 months- 2 years): infants can now move around on their own and are able to keep in contact with their parents. When a child gets scared, they automatically go to their parent for comfort. Goal-corrected partnership (18 months on): children begin to create relationships with their parents. Each partner has an equal role in the relationship. (Levine & Munsch) |
